THEME: MY YEAR OF SANCTIFICATION

Theme Scripture: John 17:17. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

The word Sanctify means “Set Apart.”

This is when the life of a believer is consciously set apart from the use of the world. The born again Christian is set apart for the use of God as a vessel of honour in the hand of our maker to do great exploits and manifest the power of God in a dying world.

Our theme for the year is sanctification. The LORD made me to understand that without sanctification, we cannot realize the total and complete exploits we always clamour for in respect of the things of the kingdom of God.

WHAT IS SANCTIFICATION?

The word sanctification has its origin from the Greek word “Hagiasmos” which means consecration; a separation unto God from a profane, secular and carnal use to a sacred and spiritual use. The word actually means “Setting Apart.”

If sin is not involved in the person or thing being set apart then no sin is cleansed in the process of setting apart but if sin and filth are involved in a person or material thing to be set apart unto God, then such must be dealt with to make it presentable to God.

Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” – KJV.

 It is important for the church to embrace the doctrine of sanctification for two main reasons:

  1. We are set apart as instrument in the hand of God for use in this end time.
  2. Though we are in the world, we are not part of the world.

John 17:14, 16.

14 – I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

16 – They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Sanctification is needed to enable us do the needful in the kingdom, to communicate the gospel in the world without being contaminated by the world.

The lesson on sanctification in this season will prepare us for the end time work before the appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ. Be prepared!

TRUTH: AGENT OF SANCTIFICATION

Scripture Text- John 8:31-36

Memory Verse: John 8:32 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

 

Truth is a reality in God’s kingdom that exists both now and forever.

Truth is a major attribute of God that cannot be disputed in heaven, hell or on the earth.

Jesus Christ our LORD and Saviour introduced Himself as the Truth (John 14:6). Scripture also says, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17.

 

The Word of God (Jesus Christ) who is the Truth is the agent of our sanctification (Ephesians 5:26). As we seek God through His Word today, may our lives be changed in Jesus Christ name (John 3:5).

  1. What is the truth?

Truth is a transcendent fundamental fact or spiritual reality.

  1. Who is the Truth? John 14:6. John 1:17. John 1:14.
  2. Dimensions of the Truth
  3. a) Truth about God. John 4:24.
  4. b) Truth about man. 1 Corinthians 15:45. Psalms 42:2.
  5. c) Truth about life. 1Timothy 6:5.
  6. d) Truth about eternity. John 17:3. 1 John 2:25.
  7. Implication of knowledge of the truth. John 8:31-36.

CONCLUSION:

What you know affects what you believe. Do all you can to know the truth because it helps to renew your mind and a renewed mind is a sanctified mind.

PRAYER:

Father, help me to always embrace the truth and see through your word in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

TRUTH: AGENT OF SANCTIFICATION II

Scripture Text: John 16:1-14

Memory Verse: John 16:13 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

Living a life that is led by the Holy Spirit is living a sanctified life (Romans 8:14). This is because you are daily guided by the Spirit of Truth who leads into all truths (John 16:13). A sanctified life receives instructions from the Holy Spirit with clarity. God is always speaking by His Spirit but many cannot hear Him today because they are not born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit. So, they lack the guidance of the Holy Spirit who is the ordained agent of our sanctification. (Revelation 22:17).

VITAL POINTS

  1. The Spirit of Truth is the Holy Spirit promised. John 14:17.
  2. We must discern the Spirit of Truth. 1 John 4:6.
  3. He will teach you all things. John 14:26.
  4. He will guide you into all Truths. John 16:13.
  5. Obedience of the Truth. 1 Peter 1:22.

CONCLUSION

The work of the Holy Spirit cannot be ignored in the life of a believer. The Holy Spirit and the Word are both agents of Sanctification. The application of the word through the constant leading of the Holy Spirit is the sure combination for living a victorious sanctified life.

PRAYER:

Father, make me more sensitive to the leading and teaching of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

LESSON 3

SANCTIFIED FOR BLESSING

Scripture Text: John 17:1-10

Memory Verse: John 17:9 “I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

Sanctified before blessing is the process that God’s kingdom operates by. This is the reason Jesus Christ did not pray for the world (1 John 2:16-17).

He therefore prayed for all those that have been delivered from the lust and trappings of the world.

These are the people that have been set apart (sanctified) for Christ that are Christ’s and therefore belong to the Father. People in this category will walk in His blessings.

VITAL POINTS

  1. Sanctified people pursue and do the will of God. 1 John 2:17. Matt 6:9-10.
  2. The blessing of answered prayer. 1 John 3:22.
  3. The blessing of bringing forth fruit. John 15:16.
  4. Fulfilment of Christ’s joy. John 17:13. John 16:22-24. John 15:10-11.
  5. Blessing of everlasting joy, no more sorrow. Revelation 21:4.

CONCLUSION

The blessings of God belong to those who hear and obey Him (Deuteronomy 28:1). The blessings of God cannot be conjured. They can only be subscribed to by obeying God. 

PRAYER:

Father, continually help me to be delivered from the trappings and lust of the world so that my focus on the things of the Kingdom will not be distorted. Amen.

LESSON 4

THE ROLE OF THE WORD IN SANCTIFICATION

Scripture Text: Psalms 19:7-14                           

Memory Verse: Psalms 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

The Word of God must be the law in your heart for the evidence of your sanctification to be sure. Jesus said in Luke 4:4b that “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” – KJV.  Until the Word of God has the pre-eminence in your life, living a sanctified life will be elusive. In addition, Psalms 119:104 shows us that God’s word and instructions help us to hate every false way of life, guaranteeing our sanctification.

VITAL POINTS

  1. Purity of God’s word. Psalms 12:6. Psalms 119:140.
  2. Righteousness of God’s word is life. Psalms 119:144.
  3. Word of God is the agent of purification and perfection. Jeremiah 23:29. Isaiah 1:25. Proverbs 25:4.
  4. The Word is a channel of understanding. Psalms 119:169. Psalms 119:130.
  5. The Word gives direction. Psalms 119:105.
  6. The Word is an instrument of strength. Psalms 119:28.

CONCLUSION

The only way we can be sanctified is by the word of God. Listening and meditating to the word of God help us to continually purify our hearts.

PRAYER:

Father, help me to commit to a life of sanctification through devotion to your word in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

LESSON 5

HOPE: OUR GREATEST MOTIVATION FOR PURIFICATION

Scripture Text: 1 John 3:1-8

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:19 “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

Hope is one of the three cardinal virtues (Faith, Hope and Love) mentioned by Paul in 1 Corinthians 13:13. It is also one of the greatest motivations for purification as a child of God. Hope gives us an expectation that is beyond our present training, education, social standing and indeed our worldly experience. It motivates us to grow in holiness as we understand our present position as children of God. Through hope, we receive purification which frees us from all defilement of sin.

VITAL POINTS

  1. Hope of salvation. Romans 15:4, 13. 2 Thessalonians 2:16. 1Thessalonins 5:8.
  2. Hope of eternal inheritance. Colossians 1:5. Ephesians 1:11-18. Hebrews 9:15.
  3. Hope of God’s glory. Romans 5:1-5. Colossians 1:27.
  4. Resurrection. Acts 23:6, 24:15. 1 John 3:3.

CONCLUSION

Our motivation to be purified from anything which is impure or deadly should be because we are God’s beloved children and that Jesus Christ is coming to make us pure and prepare us for that place of eternal excellence where we have everything available to us.

PRAYER:

Father Lord, fill my heart with hope daily as I make my dependence upon your holy word and help me to live a life of holiness and constant purification from sin in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

LESSON 6

SALVATION THROUGH SANCTIFICATION

Scripture Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-14

Memory Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:13 “But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

God’s choice is to strengthen our salvation experience through the sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth of His Word. Sanctification is a work of faith and without believing in the word sent for our sanctification, we may not maximize our all for God’s glory (1 Thessalonians 4:3, 4).

VITAL POINTS

  1. We are the elect of God through sanctification of the Spirit. 1 Peter 1:2.
  2. Those who fail to believe the truth are condemned already. 2 Thessalonians 2:12.
  3. Those who believe the word of grace and the gospel are ordained to eternal life. Acts 13:48. Colossians 1:5.
  4. Salvation is through faith in the Holy Scripture. 2 Timothy 3:15.
  5. Everyone needs to believe the truth. John 14:6. John 8:45-46. Galatians 3:1.

CONCLUSION

Setting yourself apart saves you from trouble and the snares of the world. A person who adheres to the instructions of God dwells in safety and his salvation is sure.

PRAYER:

Father, in the journey of faith, help me never to lose sight of the worth of the salvation I have received through Christ in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

LESSON 7

COMMENCEMENT AND OPERATIONAL WORK OF SANCTIFICATION I

Scripture Text: John 1:1-14

Memory Verse: John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION:

When a person gives his life to Christ, it is the spirit that gets born again. The body remains the same. His thought patterns remain the same. He may not feel any different. It is sanctification however that brings the difference. Nonetheless, he is sanctified but the realities will not be evident until God’s word begins to take root and grow inside him.

 VITAL POINTS

  1. Sanctification begins when one receives Christ who is His Sanctification. 1 Corinthians 1:30. John 1:12. 1 John 2:29.
  2. When one becomes God’s elect. 1 Peter 1:2-4; Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:33.
  3. When one is made righteous, even as He is righteous. 2 Corinthians 5:21. Romans 3:25.

CONCLUSION

Sanctification is a progressive work of grace. However, our roles should be played so that we won’t frustrate the grace of God in our lives in other not to put our “Caller” to shame. However, to be useable, one must remain sanctified.

PRAYER:

Father, grant me a full understanding of the mysteries of the person of Christ and His finished works of grace in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

LESSON 8

COMMENCEMENT AND OPERATIONAL WORK OF SANCTIFICATION II

Scripture Text: Ephesians 2:1-10

Memory Verse: Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – KJV.

INTRODUCTION

Sanctified vessels are desired by God in order to make them a showcase in this generation. Many desire to be used of God in an unusual way but are not conscious of the important role sanctification plays. God cannot use a dirty vessel. If you want to be His workmanship in this era and age, you must take the responsibility to purify your life. (2 Timothy 2:21).

VITAL POINTS

  1. When one becomes dead to sin. Ephesians 2:1-10.
  2. When one is baptized into Jesus Christ. Romans 6:2-7; Galatians 3:27-29.
  3. When one ceases to live any longer in sin. Romans 8:1-13.
  4. When one refuses to let sin reign in the mortal body. 1 John 3:5-10.

CONCLUSION

When you set yourself apart and remain pure, you begin to see greater operations of God and the Holy Spirit in your life. Do you desire more of God’s presence? Sanctify yourself!

PRAYER:

Father, as I determine to set myself apart, empower me for exploits in the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
